In 1967, at just 22 years of age, Giorgi Chikovani leased seven acres of land from his father in Tbilisi, Georgia and started off with just an acre of vines.

Giorgi made his first wine in 1967 with grapes harvested from this block.

Throughout the 1960s the winery was a one-man band, with Giorgi’s wife, Sofia, supporting him in his venture.

Giorgi made dry red and white wines, sourcing grapes from the greater Georgia regions.

Founding principles

The vineyards are the essential foundation for making outstanding wines. Giorgi have deliberately chosen the best soil and terroir on Tbilisi, selected the best vines and picked grape varieties best suited for the environment.

Maintenance of the vineyards

The maintenance of vineyards is also incredibly important. Taking care of the vineyards on your own was incredibly difficult. Georgi has assembled an experienced staff who nurses the vineyards every day. Only the ploughing of the fields is done with machinery, everything else is done by hand.

New Sorts in Vineyards

Giorgi’s team have chosen these specific grapes as they believed they could produce outstanding wines from these on they land and terroir, but several of these were also chosen out of curiosity.

sustainability

As part of the agricultural industry, we fully depend on our surrounding, just as it depends on us. That’s why we grow our produce organically and sustainably. Over the past decades the carbon footprint of the winery has been positive, which is something we’re really proud of.
